Importing a car from Norway in 4 steps

How does it work?

Importing a car from Norway may seem like a challenge, especially because the country is outside the EU. However, the process is easy to manage once you know the steps involved. Think about finding the right car, organizing transport to the Netherlands and arranging customs and registration formalities.
Marlog Europe specializes in car imports from non-EU countries and guides you from start to finish. This way you know exactly what to expect, avoid surprises and the import of your car from Norway will be quick and smooth.

1. Car search and purchase in Norway

Buying a car in Norway is usually straightforward. The supply is large, vehicles are well maintained and especially electric cars are widely available.

Popular Norwegian car websites

Are you still looking for a suitable model? These are the most popular and reliable platforms:

  • Finn.no – the largest Norwegian car platform
  • Autodb.no – wide selection from dealers and private sellers

What should you pay attention to?

  • Buy from a reliable seller

  • Check documents, maintenance and mileage

  • Take into account different specifications for fuel cars

Because Norway is outside the EU, all documents must be 100% correct to avoid delays during import.

2. Transport from Norway to the Netherlands

For transport from Norway there are three common options:

  • Road transport – fast and reliable for most vehicles
  • Road + ferry – often the most cost-effective route
  • Enclosed car transport – for exclusive, electric or vulnerable cars

Marlog Europe compares the best route, the fastest transport and the most competitive rate for every request. This ensures your vehicle arrives safely, insured and without surprises in the Netherlands.

3. Customs clearance & import duties when importing from Norway

Because Norway is not an EU member, your car must be officially imported into the Netherlands.
You will have to deal with:

  • Import duties (percentage based on value + transport)
  • VAT (usually 21%)
  • BPM (based on CO₂ emissions and age)

Correct documentation is essential. Marlog handles the full customs clearance and always calculates the lowest possible BPM.

4. RDW inspection, BPM declaration & Dutch license plate

Finally, the car must be approved and registered:

  • RDW inspection – check of identity and technical requirements
  • BPM declaration – Marlog always chooses the most advantageous method
  • License plate registration – after approval the car receives a Dutch license plate

Prefer to outsource everything? Marlog arranges the entire process: inspection, BPM, license plate and delivery.

FAQ's - Frequently asked questions about importing a car from Norway

Absolutely. You can choose the complete import process or only transport, customs clearance or license plate registration. Whatever you prefer, we arrange it.

Yes. Norway is outside the EU, so you pay import duties on the purchase value plus transport. We calculate this in advance so you know exactly what to expect.

On average, the process takes 2–5 weeks, depending on transport, customs and RDW scheduling. We determine the fastest route for each vehicle.

No. Since January 1, 2025, the BPM exemption for EVs has been abolished. For an electric car you now pay a fixed amount of €667 in BPM. This amount is not dependent on weight or CO₂ emissions and is expected to increase further in 2026 due to inflation adjustment.

For imports from Norway you need several additional documents, such as:

  • Purchase invoice
  • Norwegian registration certificate (vognkort / part 1 & 2)
  • Export or deregistration documents
  • Transport documents (CMR / Bill of Lading)

With these documents, customs can correctly import your vehicle. Marlog checks and arranges this completely for you, so that no delays occur.
